The all-new 2021 Chevy Tahoe is delivering big for American families, with big style, big power and big-time safety and technology features. Now, the 2021 Tahoe can add another “big” to its long list: big-time fuel efficiency, with the announcement that the 2021 Chevy Tahoe equipped with the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel is the most fuel-efficient full-size SUV in its class.

Chevrolet recently announced that the 2021 Tahoe with the available 3.0-liter Duramax diesel has achieved EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28 mpg highway/21 city for rear-wheel-drive models, and 26 mpg highway/20 city for four-wheel drive models.

Chevy’s first inline-six turbodiesel engine in a full-size SUV and the brand’s first diesel offered in a full-size SUV since 1999, the 3.0-liter Duramax is as good at working as it is at sipping fuel, delivering 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, for maximum towing of up to 8,200 pounds. A standard exhaust brake is also available on Duramax-equipped models, when the driver places the vehicle in tow-haul mode.

“The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings a refined engine experience to the already impressive redesign of the all-new 2021 Tahoe and Suburban,” said Bob Krapes, Chevrolet Trucks marketing director. “Combining the segment’s best fuel efficiency with increased space inside of the vehicle compared to the previous generation equals an all-new Tahoe and Suburban ready for the next long road trip or family adventure.”

First launched as an option for the 2020 Silverado 1500, the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel is a modern marvel, utilizing much of the same cutting-edge materials choices and robust architecture as the legendary 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8. For the 2021 Chevy Tahoe, engineers and designers worked to adapt the engine for more refined SUV use, including enhanced noise cancellation and an all-new engine control module. In the 2021 Tahoe, the 3.0-liter Duramax is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission
“The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings responsive torque and a smooth driving experience, ideal for those who tow or spend many hours behind the wheel,” said John Barta, assistant chief engineer for the 3.0L Duramax. “Not only is the 3.0L Duramax a refined engine, but the total experience benefits from the efforts to deliver enhanced driving dynamics in Tahoe and Suburban through the independent rear suspension and available Magnetic Ride Control and Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension.”

First deliveries of 3.0-liter Duramax-powered 2021 Chevy Tahoe models will begin before the first of the year, with the engine available on the Tahoe’s LS, LT, RST and Premier trims as a $995 option over the cost of the base 5.3-liter gasoline V8. The Duramax is also available on the Tahoe High Country trim, and knocks $1,500 off the price of a 2021 Tahoe High Country when substituted for the standard 6.2-liter V8.
