CORVETTE RACE TEAM CLAIMS GT LE MANS MANUFACTURERS TITLE
Though we love seeing folks drive off in the hardworking Chevy Silverado, sporty Chevy Camaro or sumptuous Cadillac Escalade here at Landers Chevrolet Cadillac of Joplin, there’s always something special about the day a customer comes in to buy a new Corvette. The Affordable Dream Car for over 65 years, Corvette is as red, white and blue as Mom and Apple Pie. Lots of us had posters of classic ‘Vettes on our bedroom walls growing up, so watching a customer leave the lot in their new Corvette for the first time is always something to smile about..
Corvette built that reputation as “America’s Supercar” one race at a time. The latest feather in Corvette’s very crowded cap: Chevy’s Corvette C8.R Race Team recently clinched the 2020 GT Le Mans Manufacturer’s title at the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with a start at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The win marks the 13th Manufacturer’s title for the Corvette Race Team since 2001, and caps the incredible first season for Chevrolet’s mid-engine Chevrolet C8.R race cars.
Corvette entered two new Corvette C8.Rs in the 2020 WeatherTech Championship. Full-race versions of the mid-engine C8 Corvette, the Corvette C8.Rs serve as important test beds for engineers and designers as they work to create the aerodynamics, suspension components, engine and transmission designs that will go into high-performance future variants of the Corvette C8, including the C8 Z06 and C8 ZR1.
Drivers Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor raced for Chevrolet at Sebring, and had previously clinched the GTLM Drivers and GTLM Team Championships at the storied Laguna Seca raceway.
“The first season for the Corvette C8.R has shattered all of our expectations,” said Mark Reuss, GM president. “The success of the Corvette Racing team wouldn’t be possible without the close link between the crew and the Corvette engineering team. It has been great to watch these two teams work closely together to learn from each other. I can’t wait to see what next season brings.”
These record-breaking sweeps by the Corvette Racing Team mark only the second time that a first-year Corvette model has won an IMSA Championship, following up a first-year win by the Corvette C6.R in 2005, which took the American Le Mans Series Championship that year.
The new Corvette C8 is winning races, and winning the hearts of drivers who expect more from their car than just more cup holders.
